On the evening of February 6, 2025, a devastating fire destroyed The Learning Hub—an essential after-school and summer program serving the children and families of Northview Heights Estates, a Pittsburgh Housing Authority community.
The Learning Hub was a place of hope, learning, and opportunity for countless children, providing tutoring, mentorship, and a safe space to grow. Now, that space is gone.
Thankfully, no one was in the building when the fire started, and no one was injured while controlling the fire. However, the children and families of the community are deeply saddened by this loss and are concerned about losing the much-needed programs that The Learning Hub has provided over the years.
The United Methodist Church Union has been serving the Pittsburgh community for over 131 years, creating and sustaining vital programs like The Learning Hub. We are determined to rebuild and continue our mission of providing educational and social support for the children of Northview Heights.

With your support, we can turn this tragedy into a new beginning and ensure that Northview Heights children have a place to learn, grow, and thrive.
Please consider donating and sharing this campaign to help us bring The Learning Hub back to life.
We are collecting canned goods to support the North Side Food Pantry from March 16 to April 13. Please drop off your donations at Calvary in the chapel area. Your generosity will make a difference for those in need. Thank you for helping our neighbors! Needed items include:
NCM would like Calvary to continue to collect toothpaste. There is a collection bin in the chapel. Cloth grocery bags also continue to be collected. Thank you!
2024 YEAR END UPDATE — In the year 2024 the congregation lovingly donated to the Northside Pantry 726 tubes of toothpaste along with gathering numerous homemade and other types of cloth, reusable grocery bags. In 2023 we collected 501 tubes so we continue to be aware and generous with our neighbors on the Northside. Perhaps our goal for 2025 can be a thousand?!?
The times we gather for food at Calvary are very important for making CONNECTIONS and continuing the fellowship after the worship service. We talk, laugh, share, and nourish one another in body and spirit. To sustain these connections, we are asking for volunteers and/or sponsors for our food/fellowship times.
Teams are being created to help with prep, service, and clean-up. A team will be responsible for the food/fellowship time one Sunday each month. If you are interested in serving on one of these teams, please speak to Mike Schnitgen, Food Ministry Coordinator or contact Calvary church office directly.
Calvary’s annual budget includes line items for income and expenses for weekly fellowship. A DONATIONS BOX will be provided each week and any donation amount will be appreciated. There are also opportunities for sponsorship – $50 for after service and $100 for the monthly luncheon. Please see Mike Schnitgen to sponsor a Sunday. The more we balance food income against food expenses, the more we will support a balanced budget for Calvary.
